The French military is
preparing to launch strikes against targets in Libya within the
next three months according to an anonymous French diplomatic
official who spoke to the London-based Arab-language
paper Asharq Al-Awsat.
“I am ready to bet that this
intervention will take place within three months,” the unnamed
diplomatic source said.
“The question is no longer
whether France will intervene militarily in Libya, but
when,” the diplomat made clear in comments made late last
French Defense Minister
Jean-Yves Le Drian gave similar indications during his visit to
Niger last week while visiting a new French military base near the
Niger-Libyan border. Without openly calling for war, Le Drian
strongly indicated that the French government and military consider
some form of intervention in Libya as imminent.
